The Netherlands has been a world leader in LGBTQI+ rights for over two decades. It became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2001, and has comprehensive anti-discrimination protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity. Dutch society is broadly accepting, and LGBTQI+ people are well integrated into public life. Amsterdam's Canal Pride is one of Europe's most celebrated LGBTQI+ events.
