Midsumma is Melbourne's queer arts and cultural festival, and one of the biggest LGBTQIA+ festivals in Australia. Over three weeks of the Australian summer it fills the city with theatre, cabaret, comedy, visual art, talks, sport and parties, with events in venues from the CBD to St Kilda and Fitzroy. The 2027 festival runs from Sunday 17 January to Sunday 7 February.
Midsumma Carnival opens the festival on Sunday 17 January with a free full-day takeover of Alexandra Gardens beside the Yarra River: stages, stalls, community groups and a huge picnic crowd. The Pride March follows on Sunday 31 January, gathering at Ian Johnson Oval in St Kilda and marching down Fitzroy Street to Catani Gardens, with thousands of marchers and many more watching. The festival closes on Sunday 7 February with Victoria's Pride Street Party in Fitzroy. The full programme is published in the Festival Guide, usually released in November.
Melbourne Airport (MEL) is about 30 minutes from the CBD by SkyBus or taxi. Trams cover almost every Midsumma venue: route 96 and route 16 run to St Kilda for the Pride March, and Alexandra Gardens is a short walk from Flinders Street Station.
Melbourne's LGBTQ+ nightlife is spread across a few neighbourhoods rather than one strip. Collingwood and Fitzroy, around Smith and Gertrude Streets, have the densest cluster of queer bars and late venues, while Prahran and South Yarra along Commercial Road and Chapel Street are the traditional gay heartland. St Kilda comes alive on Pride March day.
The CBD and Southbank are central for Carnival and most festival venues; St Kilda is the pick for Pride March weekend, and Fitzroy or Collingwood put you near the street party and the bars. January is peak summer and school holidays in Melbourne, so book early.
Midsumma 2027 runs 17 January – 7 February in Melbourne: Carnival in Alexandra Gardens on 17 January, the Pride March down Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, on 31 January, and the Pride Street Party on 7 February.
