Japan
Japan does not yet have national same-sex marriage or registered partnerships — a significant gap for a developed nation and a subject of ongoing legal challenges and political debate. Several major cities and prefectures issue partnership certificates with limited practical benefits. Anti-discrimination protections at the national level are absent, though some municipalities have local ordinances.
In practice, Japan is generally safe for LGBTQI+ visitors, with a long cultural tradition around gender non-conformity and a distinct queer subculture. Tokyo's Shinjuku Ni-chome is one of Asia's most famous gay districts. Public attitudes have shifted significantly among younger generations, though older and rural Japan remains more conservative.
