Weekend Pup Montreal (WPM) is an annual three-day celebration of puppy play and pet play culture within Montreal's 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Pup play is a form of roleplay -- also known as human animal roleplay -- in which participants explore an animal persona, typically in hoods, harnesses, and gear, through interaction, play, and community connection. It is a creative, joyful, and inclusive subculture that has grown rapidly across North America and Europe over the past decade.
The centrepiece of the weekend is the Concours Pup Montreal competition, which awards the gender-neutral title of 'Pup Montreal' to an individual who has stood out in the LGBTQ+ community and in the competition itself. The winner serves a one-year term as a community ambassador.
The event is co-organised by the Pup Montreal Contest Organizing Committee and WoofMTL, a community group dedicated to promoting and demystifying puppy play and pet play in Quebec. All Weekend Pup Montreal events are free or very low cost, bilingual (English and French), and held at fully accessible venues.
The 2026 edition of Weekend Pup Montreal opens the Fierte Montreal festival, which runs July 31 to August 9, 2026 -- one of the largest Pride festivals in North America. Arriving for the pup weekend means you land right at the start of a 10-day queer celebration across the city, with the main Pride parade and concert following the week after.
The weekend kicks off with a free opening 5@7 at Bar Aigle Noir (L'Aigle Noir), 1315 Rue Sainte-Catherine Est, from 17:00 to 19:00. This is the moment to meet the competition candidates, judges, former titleholders, and the wider pup, pet, and trainer community before the weekend begins. Free entry -- no reservation needed, though space is limited.
The main event of the weekend takes place at Bain Mathieu, 2915 Rue Ontario Est, from 18:00 to 21:00. Doors open at 18:00; the competition evening runs 18:30-21:00. Expect pup showcases, performances by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the election of Pup Montreal 2026 at the close of the evening. Following the results, the celebration continues in the lower room and flows into the Kink Playground party with Bear It from 21:00 onwards. Weekend Pup Montreal takes place in and around Montreal's Gay Village (Le Village), one of the largest and most vibrant LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods in the world. The Village stretches along Rue Sainte-Catherine Est between Amherst and Papineau, marked at either end by the iconic rainbow pillars at Beaudry and Papineau metro stations. During summer the street is closed to cars and transforms into a kilometre-long outdoor terrace of bars, cafes, and restaurants.
The Village has been a recognised LGBTQ+ neighbourhood since the 1980s and is home to some of Canada's most established queer bars, community spaces, and organisations. For the pup and kink community, Montreal is an active and welcoming city -- Bar Le Stud, Eagle Montreal, and Sky Pub are among the Village institutions with a leather and bear crowd, and WoofMTL runs events throughout the year beyond the Weekend Pup Montreal programme.
Montreal is served by Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), approximately 25 minutes from the Gay Village by taxi or rideshare. The 747 express bus connects the airport to downtown (Berri-UQAM station) around the clock for $11 CAD.
The Montreal metro is the easiest way to move between venues. For Bar Aigle Noir and the Village, take the Green Line to Beaudry station -- the bar is a 2-minute walk east along Sainte-Catherine. For Bain Mathieu on Saturday night, Papineau station (Green Line) is a 12-minute walk south-east along Ontario Est, or take bus 30 east from the Village for a few stops.
Book accommodation as early as possible. The Weekend Pup Montreal dates (July 31 to August 2) fall on the opening weekend of Fierte Montreal, so the city -- and the Village in particular -- fills quickly.
