Aspen is a former silver-mining town in Colorado's Rocky Mountains that grew into one of the most famous ski resorts in North America. Four ski mountains, a walkable Victorian downtown full of galleries and restaurants, and a celebrity-studded après scene make it a byword for mountain glamour.
Aspen has no permanent gay bars, but it has one of the longest LGBTQ+ traditions in winter travel. Aspen Gay Ski Week started in 1977 and is run by AspenOUT, the town's LGBTQ+ community organisation. Each January it takes over the town for a week of skiing, après parties and nightlife, and the 2027 edition is its 50th anniversary.
Four mountains are covered by a single lift pass: Aspen Mountain (Ajax), above downtown; Aspen Highlands, home of the famous Highland Bowl; Buttermilk, gentle terrain and the X Games venue; and Snowmass, the largest, about 20 minutes away. Free buses link them all.
The season runs from late November to April. January brings cold, dry powder and Gay Ski Week; February and March are sunnier and busier. Summer is a quieter, high-altitude season for hiking, music and food festivals.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is a few minutes from town and has connections via Denver and other US hubs. Many visitors fly into Denver and drive about 3.5–4 hours, or connect on to Eagle County Airport. Aspen is expensive, so book early, especially for Gay Ski Week.
Aspen is very safe and welcoming. Colorado has strong anti-discrimination protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity. The town is small and affluent; same-sex couples are a familiar sight, especially during Gay Ski Week.
The United States varies significantly by state in terms of legal protections and cultural attitudes. Same-sex marriage is federally protected. Federal anti-discrimination protections apply in employment. However, state-level legislation varies considerably — particularly on transgender rights, where several states have enacted restrictive laws since 2023. Major cities (New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Seattle) are very welcoming; rural areas and some states can be significantly less so. Trans travellers should research the specific states they plan to visit.
