Guerneville is a small town on the Russian River in Sonoma County, California, surrounded by redwood forest and wine country. It has been an LGBTQ+ getaway from San Francisco for decades, with gay-owned resorts, river beaches and a friendly bar scene. Every summer it hosts Lazy Bear Week, one of the longest-running bear events in the world.
Guerneville's LGBTQ+ scene is small, relaxed and centred on the main street and a handful of resorts. The R3 Hotel, a long-standing gay resort with a big pool, is the social hub on summer weekends. Bars along Main Street round out the evenings. Expect a casual, outdoorsy crowd rather than big-city nightlife.
Lazy Bear Week takes over the town for a week each summer, usually from late July into early August. It has been running since 1996 and is organised by the Lazy Bear Fund, a non-profit that gives the money raised to LGBTQ+ and health charities. Expect pool parties, river days and parties across town. Bear Tag passes are sold in advance.
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, just north of town, has easy trails among old-growth redwoods. In summer, Johnson's Beach and other river beaches are popular for swimming, kayaking and floating down the Russian River. The wineries of the Russian River Valley are a short drive away, and the Sonoma coast is about 30 minutes west.
Guerneville is about 75 miles (roughly 1.5–2 hours' drive) north of San Francisco. The nearest airport is Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, about 30 minutes away. Public transport is limited, so most visitors drive. The town itself is small and walkable.
Guerneville is very safe and has a long history as an LGBTQ+ haven. California has some of the strongest LGBTQ+ protections in the United States. As anywhere rural, take care on the river, where currents and water levels change through the year.
Guerneville is very safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ travellers, and has been an LGBTQ+ resort town for decades. California has marriage equality and comprehensive protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity.
The United States varies significantly by state in terms of legal protections and cultural attitudes. Same-sex marriage is federally protected. Federal anti-discrimination protections apply in employment. However, state-level legislation varies considerably — particularly on transgender rights, where several states have enacted restrictive laws since 2023. Major cities (New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Seattle) are very welcoming; rural areas and some states can be significantly less so. Trans travellers should research the specific states they plan to visit.
